How a Food Allergy Helped Create Better Ketchup

Ketchup without tomatoes.

Between 26 million and 33 million people in the U.S. have a food allergy according to both the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.  In many cases, the cure is simply to not eat the food that causes the allergy. 

Chances are, you or someone you know has a food allergy, food sensitivity, or choose to cut out certain foods for medical reasons.  We know several people who have food allergies and our close friend’s daughter has to avoid certain foods altogether due to an auto-immune disease. One of the most inflammatory food groups for her are nightshades, which include tomatoes, the key ingredient in America’s favorite condiment. 

For the last few years, Hector has been making a tomato-free version of our original ketchup for her because who doesn’t love ketchup?!

 

Ketchup Without Tomatoes

It sounds a little ridiculous, but tomato-free ketchup that still tastes amazing can be attained!

When we decided to clean up our ingredients even more, we considered which ingredients we absolutely needed, which ones we didn’t, and what feedback we had gotten from our customers. One of the things we often heard when people saw that our ketchup base was made from apples, beets, and carrots, was “Oh, yay! A tomato-free ketchup!” but it wasn’t. At least not yet. We learned from people’s stories why they were avoiding tomatoes, how much they desired a healthy, delicious, tomato-free ketchup, and we listened.

Because Hector had already been making a tomato-free version, he knew it was possible.

For all of you who know Hector, he’s always creating new versions of our food in his test kitchen.  After many months of work and a few tweaks:  success!  Our new ketchup looks and tastes even better than when it had tomatoes.

In our previous post, How to Get Fit With Food, we detailed how our ketchup helps with fitness by having no added sugars, low carbs, no fat, and all the other details needed for a healthy diet.

More good news:  our new ketchup remains super healthy!

 

Try It, You'll Love It

One of our customers literally said “I need to try your new ketchup right away” when she heard that our new ketchup contained no tomatoes.  She loved it.

Trying it.  That’s really the best way to decide for yourself. 

Here’s our video about how to make one of our favorite recipes that includes our ketchup:  Sunshine Hash

Sunshine Hash

Fully flavored hash served with a sunny side up egg

Mix
    1 cup cubed sweet potato
    Red onion julienne
    2 cusps cleaned and halved Brussel sprouts
    2 chopped zucchinis
    ¼ cup of our ketchup
    1 TBSP garlic
    1 TBSP onion powder
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp crushed red pepper
     
    Cook
      Go once around the pan with olive oil and let it heat for a few moments
      Add the sweet potatoes
      When the sweet potatoes start to soften just a bit, add the Brussel sprouts
      Let the sprouts caramelize for a me moments and then add the zucchini
      When all the veggies are cooked, add our ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and crushed red pepper
      Finish with a fried egg
